Japanese-Chinese Relations Research

Author: Shotaro Takeuchi

Publication Date: 2004-05-01
Features: Before the normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and China in the 1970s, Shotaro Takeuchi primarily focused on reviewing and summarizing the lessons learned from both positive and negative aspects of the two countries' historical interactions. His discussions ranged from ancient figures like Xu Fu and Ennin to modern figures such as Miyazaki Tomonori and Sun Xuezhong, as well as the perceptions and descriptions of modern Japanese writers about China. Through various examples, he elaborated on the significance of peaceful exchanges between neighboring countries separated by "a strip of water." After the normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and China, Takeuchi, with a calm attitude, repeatedly reminded people not to be content with mere verbal expressions of "friendship" between the two countries, but to place greater emphasis on mutual understanding of each other's actual national conditions. Only in this way could blind or superficial perspectives be avoided, and the development of Japan-China relations could be steadily and effectively advanced. At the turn of the new century, Takeuchi further emphasized that the relationship between Japan and China should focus on cultural mutual communication.
