Cao Xueqin, also known as Zhan, styled Xueqin, was born in the late Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty (1715) or the early Yongzheng period (1724), and died on the New Year's Eve of the 27th year of the Qianlong reign (1763) or the 28th year (1764). Throughout his life, Cao experienced great changes in his family, and this book was likely written during the humble circumstances of "humble windows and doors, rope beds and tile stoves."
Gao E, styled Lanzhu, was a jinshi (imperial scholar) during the Qianlong era, with his birth and death years unknown, or possibly thirty years later than Cao Xueqin. The story tells the love between Lin Daiyu and Jia Baoyu in feudal society.
