Water Margin, traditionally attributed to Luo Guanzhong of the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties, was written by Luo Guanzhong, a native of Hangzhou, whose name was Ben. He compiled many works, including Romance of the Three Kingdoms, The Legend of the Tang Dynasty, and The Powdered Castle. It is also attributed to Shi Nai'an, with Luo Guanzhong as the editor. Shi Nai'an was from Dongdu in the Yuan Dynasty, named Zi'an. He resigned from office in the late Yuan Dynasty due to disagreements with the authorities and returned home to write in seclusion. Jin Shengtan of the Ming Dynasty later determined that the later seventy chapters were added by Luo Guanzhong.
