Red peach escapes the wall

Author: émile Zola
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2004-05-01
Features: With his sharp pen and unprecedented intensity, Zola portrays the conflict between the "spirit and flesh" of humanity. As the renowned critic Sainte-Beuve said, "This work is outstanding and earnest, and in some aspects, it can open an era in the development of contemporary fiction." It studies an extremely special phenomenon. Indeed, the drama of modern life is not as fearful and mad as depicted here, but rather more relaxed. This phenomenon is a secondary aspect of the book. The author wanted to present every detail he observed, which made the entire work more tense and thrilling. On the other hand, this work lacks the bright style required for psychological novels. In short, if the author were to write a good work now, he would have to observe society from a broader perspective, depicting its various changing facets, especially employing clear and natural language. The book tells the story of Thérèse Raquin, a vigorous woman who marries a physically frail and lifeless husband, spending countless hollow nights by his side. After meeting the young man Laurent, they quickly experience a passionate collision. To escape that terrible life forever, Thérèse and Laurent murder their husband and formally marry. Finally, they both commit suicide due to unbearable inner self-condemnation.
