My Name Is Red has three layers: It is a murder mystery, a philosophical novel, and also a love poem. The exquisite prose, the captivating references, and the intricate plot are truly commendable—quoting a character from the book, the miniature painting master Osman's words—Pamuk possesses a "charming artistic talent and demonic-like wisdom." In the late 1590s in Istanbul, the king's sultan secretly commissioned the creation of a great book to praise his life and empire. Four of the most outstanding miniature painters of the time gathered in the capital, working together to meticulously draw this extraordinary masterpiece. Meanwhile, a young man who had been away from home for 12 years finally returned to his hometown—Istanbul. What awaited him besides love were a series of murders. A miniature painter disappeared, only to be found dead in a deep well, and the master assigned to draw the manuscript for the sultan was also killed. Were the victims killed out of rivalry among painters, entanglement in love, or due to the secret commission from the sultan? The sultan demanded that the court painter, Osman, and the young man investigate the matter within three days, and the clues might be hidden somewhere in the unfinished illustrations in the book. A dog, a tree, a gold coin, red, two corpses, death, and even the murderer all came forward, as if they had life, relying on their own experiences and observations to tell us every clue in detail.
