Newborn umbilical cord care

Patient's question:

Baby is 9 days old. When caring for the umbilical cord, do I need to lift the black part on the navel and disinfect it? There is white pus in the umbilical fold, should I clean and disinfect it?

Doctor's answer:

The condition you described may be caused by a wound infection. On one hand, systemic treatment should be administered based on the severity of the wound infection and the overall response. This includes intravenous infusion of a large amount of antibiotics. On the other hand, wound cleaning and dressing changes are necessary to thoroughly remove foreign bodies and necrotic tissue from the wound, drain pus, prevent the spread of inflammation, and promote the healthy growth of granulation tissue to achieve healing.
