Newborn traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage

Patient's question:

On January 9, 2013, a nine-day-old infant fell off the bed. CT showed longitudinal cistern of the brain, increased density of the tentorium cerebelli, no enlargement, deformation, or displacement of the ventricles, cisterns, or sulci, central alignment of the midline brain structures, and no signs of fractures were observed in the bone window.

Doctor's answer:

It is recommended that you look into the grading of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. It is generally divided into three degrees: mild cases often have no sequelae, moderate cases may have partial sequelae, and severe cases mostly have sequelae, such as motor or intellectual impairments. In mild cases, the child's mental state may, and it usually returns to normal within 3 days. In moderate cases, it takes about a week to return to normal, with symptoms like drowsiness. In severe cases, the abnormalities are more pronounced, and the child's mental state remains poor even after more than a week. For treatment, brain cell nutrition drugs are used for a course of about 10 days, and regular follow-up head CT scans are recommended.
