Features: A History of English Novel Art follows a historical progression as its thread, centers on the evolution of novel art, and frames the transformation of literary schools. It aims to reveal the developmental trajectory and fundamental laws of English novel art, as well as delve into its specific characteristics and aesthetic value. This distinguishes it from conventional novel histories that present basic information—such as the lives of authors and summaries of their works—in chronological order, which, though comprehensive, lack in-depth analysis. While comprehensively discussing the historical background, social environment, economic relations, and cultural trends that influenced the development of English novels, I attempt to evaluate the evolution and progression of English novel art through new concepts and scientific literary historiography. By placing novel texts within their own context of continuity and horizontal connections, I strive for reasonable and scientific conclusions.
To this end, I have outlined a clear research framework from the vast body of English novels and conducted in-depth analyses of the creative techniques and artistic styles of over thirty authors who made significant contributions to the development of English novel art. The book discusses more than sixty novels in detail, covering topics such as: the historical and cultural background of English novels; the artistic features of early English novels; the styles and artistic characteristics of 18th-century novels; 19th-century novel art; modernist novels: experimentation and innovation.
