Features: This series of "Literati Lovers" aims to explore the emotional interactions between famous literati and women or men from the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties as the main, using biographical studies and literary creation as primary materials. Through a biographical approach, it presents poignant emotional experiences in an accessible manner, bringing characters to life and recreating social landscapes of their time. The selected figures were highly representative of their eras. Yuan Zhen's "Record of Meeting in the Garden" (also known as "The Story of Yingying") has a certain real-life prototype and vividly reflects the marital and romantic views of Tang Dynasty literati. The story later evolved into the famous "Romance of the West Chamber," demonstrating the evolution of ancient love concepts. Li Qingzhao and Zhao Mingcheng were an exceptionally rare loving couple in Chinese history. Their love was set against the backdrop of the rise of Neo-Confucianism in Song Dynasty, the sudden shift in women's views on love, and the major social upheavals during the Northern and Southern Song periods. Zhao Mengfu was not only a renowned poet, calligrapher, and painter but also a nobleman of the fallen state. Under the social context of Mongol rule in the Yuan Dynasty, his views on marriage and love underwent certain changes, revealing the process of integration between Central Chinese culture and foreign cultures. Feng Menglong lived in the Ming Dynasty, a period similar to the early emergence of capitalist factors, the awakening of urban consciousness, and the pursuit of sensual pleasures. He paid close attention to themes related to women throughout his life, and his works embody the views of Ming Dynasty women and love. Hou Huizhen, after marrying, was deeply mourned by Feng Menglong in numerous poems, and he never visited brothels again. Mao Biqiang and Dong Xiaowan lived during the transition between the Ming and Qing dynasties. Their love story was intertwined with the great changes of their time. Mao Biqiang created the unique "Recollection in Words" style of love poems for Dong Xiaowan, which became widely celebrated by later generations. However, the historical records of such pairs of lovers from ancient times varied greatly. Often, one partner achieved significant literary success, which in turn made their love stories famous and widely circulated. The other partner in the relationship became equally well-known. In this series, Yuan Zhen, Li Qingzhao, Zhao Mengfu, Feng Menglong, and Mao Biqiang all left behind substantial works and rich personal biographical materials. The other half of each pair, however, has relatively scarce records. As a result, the series inevitably focuses more on one figure over the other. All these factors collectively illustrate the complex evolution of marital and romantic concepts in ancient China and their diverse manifestations. The series aims to combine popular accessibility with academic rigor. At the same time, it offers a fresh and in-depth understanding of the literary creations of specific authors. The authors of the series hope that readers will enjoy exploring history with interest and gain aesthetic pleasure, thereby benefiting from the establishment of healthy marital and romantic concepts.
