A Collection of Works by Yu Ying-shih. Volume 4, A Historical Examination of the Chinese Intellectual

Author: Yu Ying-shih

Publish Date: 2004-04-01
Features: These four volumes of the Collected Works are largely essays on Chinese historiography, cultural history, and intellectual history, though a few discuss Western history and culture. The writing period spans from the 1950s to the recent one or two years. Over this half-century, the author's knowledge and ideas have undergone significant changes and developments. If the author were to rewrite these essays with today's understanding, they would undoubtedly present a different face. However, whether through rewriting or thorough revision, it is practically impossible. The author can only publish the old works anew to preserve their authenticity. This volume includes 16 selected essays. On one hand, it discusses the evolution of ancient Chinese academic thought, with a focus on the formation of the concept of Qing Dynasty intellectual history and the roles and influences of figures like Dai Dongyuan and Zhang Xuecheng in this process. On the other hand, it systematically examines and reevaluates the rise, development, and historical status and role of the ancient Chinese intellectual class—the shi. The insights are unique, the arguments coherent, and though rooted in antiquity, their implications are modern.
