Features: VHDL, as the mainstream design language for digital systems both domestically and internationally, is also one of the important pillars supporting the development of modern electronics. With the continuous innovation of System-on-Chip (SoC), the language capabilities of VHDL have been expanding, and many extended subsets now support SoC development. Meanwhile, various EDA tools widely support the IEEE standards of VHDL, and significant breakthroughs have been achieved in VHDL modeling, synthesis, simulation, testing, and verification in recent years. As the scale of FPGA/CPLD devices continues to grow beyond the level of millions of gates, and with the rapid development of embedded microprocessors (such as ARM, Nios, and MIPS), the application of VHDL has expanded from traditional digital system design to the design of Very Large-Scale Integrated Circuits (VLSI) and embedded systems, playing a crucial role in fields such as communications, automatic control, and computing. Based on the widespread use and promising future of VHDL, many domestic universities have recently introduced various EDA teaching programs related to VHDL. Our institution has been offering VHDL teaching for many years, and through teaching and practical experience, we have found that using EDA tools for VHDL instruction significantly enhances students' grasp of digital circuit fundamentals and practical skills with a twofold effect. Additionally, as a foundational course for information-related majors, VHDL teaching lays a solid platform for subsequent specialized courses.
As an important component of modern electronics technology courses, this book organically integrates the VHDL language with digital system design. Chapter 1 introduces the basics of the VHDL language, covering its statements and syntax. Chapters 2 and 3 provide VHDL-based experiments for combinational and sequential circuits, helping readers easily get started and reinforce their fundamental knowledge of digital circuits. Chapter 4 focuses on state machine design, Chapter 5 on memory design, Chapter 6 on Digital Signal Processing (DSP) design, and Chapter 7 on digital system design examples. The book includes a total of 108 design examples, allowing readers to practice with EDA tools and FPGA/CPLD development systems. By modifying and designing based on these examples, readers can gradually become familiar with VHDL development and eventually create their own source programs independently.
This book can serve as a textbook for undergraduate and junior college students in electrical engineering and most non-electrical engineering disciplines. It is also suitable for students in correspondence universities, vocational schools, as well as distance learning and online education programs. Additionally, it can be used as a reference book for engineers engaged in digital system design.
