Features: For those learning calligraphy, one of the most convenient methods when transitioning from copying stone inscriptions and rubbings to calligraphic creation is to use the technique of collecting characters. This involves finding existing characters in the original inscriptions while also combining the radicals and stroke patterns from the same inscriptions to create new characters not present in the original. In terms of content selection, it is best to start with works with relatively fewer characters, as this makes the process of collecting characters easier and facilitates better arrangement of the composition, thereby boosting one's confidence in creation.
The "Chinese Couplets Collection Series" is a practical collection of characters meticulously compiled for calligraphy enthusiasts, especially beginners, based on the above two aspects. It selects over forty well-known couplets from the history of Chinese literature, arranged in order of increasing number of characters and difficulty. Using classic inscriptions such as the Shichen Stele, Liquan Inscription from the Jiucheng Palace, Yan Qinli Stele, and Xuanmi Tower Stele as models for collecting characters, this series enables learners to transition from copying to creation more efficiently, achieving twice the result with half the effort.
This collection also has two additional features: First, it provides basic patterns for creating couplets, enriching the compositional arrangements while allowing calligraphers to experience the different feelings each pattern brings. Second, it selects eight characters from each couplet, enlarges them, and places them on the right side of each couplet, enabling learners to focus on practicing the more challenging characters before formal creation, thereby increasing the likelihood of success.
Our publishing house has also compiled and published two other series of character collection books: the "Chinese Ancient Poetry Collection Series" and the "Chinese Ancient Prose Collection Series." These three series are sister collections with distinct focuses, offering calligraphy enthusiasts a systematic and progressive path to mastering regular script and clerical script.
This book is an attempt to compile calligraphy collections using computers. There may be imperfections, and we sincerely hope readers will offer constructive feedback to help us improve our work.
