Features: Since was founded by Professor Masao Morita in 1918, it has undergone more than half a century of development. This therapy completely negates the treatment methods based on Western and European neurosis studies. At the time in Japan, it was difficult to accept, but its true value has been proven through numerous experiments, earning high praise. Today, it is widely recognized in Japan as thebestpsychotherapy for treating neurosis and has garnered significant global attention. The neurotic symptoms described at the beginning of this book are experienced by almost everyone to some degree. Most of these experiences are mild or temporary, and naturally do not require treatment. However, if these symptoms persist and develop into chronic conditions, causing suffering and hindering normal daily work, study, and interpersonal relationships, timely treatment is necessary. These symptoms that cause a certain degree of impairment in social life, as described below, are referred to asneurosis, which is the exact target of Morita Therapy. Those suffering from neurosis are completely different from what people commonly callpsychosis. Generally, these individuals appear no different from ordinary people. If they conceal their symptoms, not only friends but even relatives are almost unaware of their suffering. Even if they openly share their struggles, they are difficult for ordinary people to understand, which only deepens their pain and makes it harder to escape. Neurotic patients are originally stable in character and have good intelligence, possessing highly capable qualities. This is fully demonstrated by the life achievements of those who have been cured. However, those who have not received effective treatment are merely hindered by neurotic symptoms, losing confidence, suffering intensely, falling into a negative state, and unable to fully utilize their abilities. This is truly a pity. In recent years, mental drugs have continuously emerged, and doctors simply prescribe them when they encounter neurotic symptoms. It should be noted that for neurosis, medication cannot (cure) it but can only serve as an auxiliary treatment, providing some calming effect for those excessively anxious (though medication is essential for depression). Neurosis accounts for the majority of neuroses. It has achieved significant therapeutic effects in practice and has been recognized by most psychiatrists, gaining increasing attention from the medical communities in the West and Europe. A book titledMorita Psychotherapyby an American scholar who trained at Takayama Seishoen Hospital has already been published. I have also published numerous articles on Morita Therapy in foreign magazines in foreign languages on multiple occasions and have been delighted with the positive response. However, Professor Morita himself had once expressed deep regret that his therapy was not yet recognized abroad. I recall being taught by Professor Morita in 1929, succeeding him as a professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Neurology at Jikei Medical University in 1937, and founding Takayama Seishoen Hospital in 1940, where I have continuously engaged in treating neurosis. More than five thousand patients have been hospitalized under my care alone. I have devoted my entire fifty-year career to this work with great passion, first, to heal neurotic patients with Morita Therapy and help them regain a joyful new life; second, to spread the true value of Morita Therapy through clinical practice, allowing it to flourish further. In 1974, on the centennial of Professor Morita’s birth, I, as an initiator, organized theCommemorative Centennial of Masao Moritawith fellow colleagues. At the event, we publishedThe Collected Works of Masao Moritain seven volumes,The Conduct and Speech of Professor Yokoi, and other publications. Lectures were also held in various places. As time passes, fewer and fewer people who directly studied under Professor Morita or received treatment from him personally remain. Including these individuals, theMorita School
