Ship Theory is a science that explores ship navigation performance based on fluid mechanics. This book is divided into five parts: Part I is Ship Statics, Part II is Ship Resistance, Part III is Ship Propulsion, Part IV is Ship Maneuvering, and Part V is Ship Wave Resistance. The book is divided into two volumes, with the first volume covering Ship Statics and Ship Resistance, and the second volume covering Ship Propulsion, Ship Maneuvering, and Ship Wave Resistance. The third part of the second volume, Ship Propulsion, focuses primarily on propeller propulsion. In addition to elaborating on the basic principles, geometric characteristics, hydrodynamic performance, mutual influence between the hull and the propeller, cavitation phenomena, and blade strength of propellers, it emphasizes the discussion of propeller chart design and the coordination between the ship, engine, and propeller. It also provides necessary introductions to theoretical design methods for propellers and propeller excitation forces, as well as a brief overview of special propulsion devices beyond conventional propellers. Part IV, Ship Maneuvering, primarily analyzes the basic equations of ship maneuvering motion, relevant concepts, maneuverability criteria, and testing methods, with a focus on the hydrodynamic performance of rudders and rudder design issues. Part V, Ship Wave Resistance, primarily discusses the oscillatory motion of ships in wind and waves. Therefore, it first starts with the characteristics of sea waves, elaborating on the basic theories of statistical and spectral analysis of irregular waves, discussing the response relationship between waves and ship motion, and focusing on the heave, roll, and pitch of ships in cross seas and head seas. It provides necessary practical results, design data, and theoretical calculation methods. It also introduces considerations of wave resistance in ship design and the analysis methods for actual ship tests. This book serves as a textbook for undergraduate students in the field of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering in higher education institutions and can also be referenced by relevant engineering technicians.
