Features: The novel features over a hundred named characters, each holding varying degrees of importance in the story. However, the core figures that run through the entire narrative are actually just five—Qian Qianyi and Liu Shiyi, Mao Xiang and Dong Xiaowan, and Huang Zongxi. Among these five, Qian, Mao, and Huang represent three different types within the "scholar" class, each with their own general representativeness; Liu and Dong, on the other hand, belong to two distinct personalities and pursuits within the special social group of "celebrated courtesans." Of course, as the antagonists of this group, the novel also dedicates considerable space to the villainous officials Ma Shiyi and Ruan Dachu, as well as the defected Ming loyalist Hong Chengchou, who should also be considered important figures of rank. The setting of Sunset over the Fragrant Grass is the first part of the trilogy White Gate Willow, focusing on the eve of the Ming Dynasty's collapse, the fierce struggles between the literati-led "Restoration Society" and the "Eunuch Faction," and the turbulent love story between Mao Xiang, one of the four "scholarly gentlemen" of the Restoration Society, and the famous courtesan Dong Xiaoyuan. These conflicts intertwine with the political deals orchestrated by powerful officials in the shadows, which exonerate the remnants of the Eunuch Faction, making the political struggles, factional conflicts, and internal strife in Jiangnan even more intricate and convoluted. Through the lens of a group of intellectuals at the time—what are known as the "scholars"—as well as the social dynamics from high-ranking officials in the court to the courtesans of Qinhuai and the bustling streets of Jiangnan, the novel vividly recreates the sharp and complex social contradictions of China in the mid-17th century, presenting a picture of a declining era where extravagance and decay give way to rebirth. Whether depicting the lives and emotions of historical figures or the customs and folk culture of golden Jiangnan, the work is meticulous, vivid, and full of fresh insights. The Dawn of Wind and Rain is the third part of the trilogy White Gate Willow, with the plot continuing from the previous volume. It describes the remnants of the Ming Dynasty after the fall of the Hongguang Dynasty retreating to the eastern regions of Zhejiang, where they continue to resist the Qing forces until their eventual demise. In this volume, the main characters are driven by fate onto different paths. Huang Zongxi joins the rebel army to engage in armed struggle; Mao Xiang and Dong Xiaoyuan become refugees, wandering through hardships; Qian Qianyi surrenders and heads north, while Liu Shiyi remains alone in Nanjing, each experiencing various trials and tribulations before ultimately uniting under the banner of resistance against the Qing. As the grand conclusion of the entire work, this volume expands upon the foundations laid in the previous two parts, with a broader structure, richer colors, and more intricate plots. The contrasts between justice and evil, baseness and nobility, ambition and desire, conquest and resistance, decay and rebirth are revealed more fully and thoroughly, immersing readers in profound artistic enjoyment while also offering deeper insights and reflections on the responsibilities and destinies of the "scholars"—the intellectual class—as cultural guardians. The Autumn Dew and Perilous City is the second part of the trilogy White Gate Willow. Set against the turbulent and complex backdrop of the late Ming Dynasty, the novel vividly and authentically recreates the establishment and rapid collapse of the Southern Ming Hongguang Dynasty. When the rebel leader Li Zicheng led his army into Beijing, the sudden fall of the Ming Chongzhen Emperor brought shock and chaos to Jiangnan. To defend the half of the empire in Jiangnan, the Donglin Group, led by Shi Kefa, clashed with the political forces headed by Ma Shiyi in their bid to install a new emperor. The contradictions within the government grew increasingly sharp, with the struggles among factions becoming even more intense, even reaching the brink of civil war, until the Qing forces launched a southward advance. Through the portrayal of the fates and character changes of a series of famous figures such as Huang Zongxi, Chen Zhenhui, Shi Kefa, Qian Qianyi, Liu Shiyi, and Dong Xiaoyuan, the work presents a grand historical panorama with diverse brushstrokes, covering a vast scope and numerous characters. It not only depicts the fierce battles between right and wrong in the political arena but also the rivalries and conflicts within the Donglin faction, as well as the emotional entanglements of men and women on both sides of the Qinhuai River amidst the chaos of war. These threads weave together into a sweeping, tragic lament of the end of an era, possessing strong historical depth and artistic.
