Features: The author of A History of Chinese Animation Art in the 20th Century, Zhang Huilin, is a graduate student majoring in art history. Under the guidance of Professor Wang Ningyu, she chose the topic of Chinese animation history as her graduation project, presenting it as a gift to society before starting her career—a contribution worth appreciating. While art history and animation history fall under the same artistic category, they are distinct disciplines. Yet she overcame difficulties, sought advice from experts, and extensively researched materials, compiling a relatively systematic manuscript on the history of Chinese animation art in a short period, which is truly commendable. Particularly in the current context where theoretical research on Chinese animation is somewhat neglected and academic works are scarce, the publication of this book will undoubtedly promote further studies in Chinese animation history and the development of Chinese animation theory. This book helps us review the historical progression of Chinese animation art, which must evoke deep emotions and reflections among the older generations of animators. Starting from the Wan Brothers' research into animation in 1922 and the creation of China's first animated short film in 1926, Chinese animation has a history of 80 years. Its inception time ranks second only to Europe and America, placing it among the leading nations in Asia. Due to various social upheavals and other reasons, Chinese animation has experienced a winding and challenging development path.
