In 1956, his short story "A Young Man Comes to the Organization Department" gained social attention. In 1957, he was mistakenly labeled a rightist and later transferred to work in Xinjiang. In 1978, he returned to Beijing and served as Vice President of the Beijing Writers' Association, Editor-in-Chief of the journal People's Literature, Minister of Culture, and Vice President of the Chinese Writers' Association. He has written numerous novels, including The Shape of Things to Come, Youth Forever, The Blue Fox, and the "Seasons" series, as well as a large number of short stories and essays. The Shape of Things to Come won the Second People's Literature Award. Wang Meng's novels are generally known for their wit and flair, rarely revealing much of his own personal struggles. Even in those novels modeled after his own life, Wang Meng often uses self-deprecation as a way to cope, treating his experiences with a touch of humor. Self-deprecation is Wang Meng's scalpel, yet it is also his armor. Wang Meng frequently uses self-deprecation to resolve many difficult issues, making it a signature dish of his writing style. However, The Shape of Things to Come can be considered the product of immense effort. It is Wang Meng's first novel set against the backdrop of a family, and it is deeply tied to his own life story. This novel, once hailed as a critique of fatherhood, actually possesses many elements of a classic work, such as the conflict and confrontation between Eastern and Western cultures. Not only did his parents fail to resolve these issues, but they have become even more apparent and prominent in our time. The cultural dilemma reflected in The Shape of Things to Come has only intensified in our present day. Although Wang Meng has many excellent novels, his later "Seasons" series is even more deeply invested in both writing and emotion.
