Features: In today's era, military technology is advancing at an unprecedented pace. The security of the future world and the competition among major powers ultimately come down to a competition in military technology. This backdrop provides an excellent opportunity for the rise of a new generation of military-themed literature. The People's Liberation Army Literature and Art Publishing House has released Guo Jiwei's Bet the Next Bullet, which comprehensively and deeply reflects the current state and developments in the field of medical technology within the PLA, showcasing a strong sense of realism and timeliness. This novel is clearly very different from past military-themed literature, as it depicts stories in the realm of military high technology, giving it a strong sense of spectacle. The narrative consistently emphasizes this spectacle, and it is set against the backdrop of potential global strategic relations between China and the U.S., giving this spectacle a broader scope and an international perspective. The title of the novel is Bet the Next Bullet—a bet with whom? The subtext, of course, is the military competition between China and the U.S. The novel does not rigidly or parallelly depict the conflict between China and the U.S. but instead reveals underlying dangers through collaborative research and the experiences of Jiang Zimei. In the U.S., Jiang Zimei is kidnapped by a terrorist group with the intent to develop a destructive gene-killer weapon. From the perspective of the novel's narrative, this is a technique for creating spectacle, and this storyline is clearly influenced by Hollywood, with both the plot and character portrayals bearing Hollywood's imprint. Clearly, the competition and conflict between China and the U.S. remain the backdrop, and the crises of the future world are always invoked as a reference. The novel devotes significant attention to the reforms within the PLA's medical technology sector and the resistance and difficulties faced in these reforms. Due to this international perspective, the urgency and severity of these reforms become undeniable. The novel does not shy away from the grim realities of the PLA's medical technology sector, revealing the various challenges faced in reforming the field, while also expressing a passionate idealism in the pursuit of victory. The novel is clearly filled with confidence. This confidence is embodied through the portrayal of a group of intelligent and brave military scientists. The main characters—Fu Chaosheng, Jiang Zimei, You Xiaoke, and Liang E—showcase the characteristics of a new generation of technological military personnel. These characters are distinctly marked by the times, driven by the ideal of strengthening the military through technology, and they push forward the rapid development of military medical technology with their wisdom, courage, and relentless efforts. Of course, the novel spends a great deal of ink on emotions. Although it depicts the struggles of people in the field of military medical high technology, it does not simply list high-tech stories but delves into the personalities, psychology, emotions, and souls of these special military personnel. The emotional thread is primarily embodied by Jiang Zimei, her ambiguous feelings for Fu Chaosheng, her marital turmoil with You Xiaoke, and her deep connection with Liang E. These emotional entanglements are depicted with great subtlety, complexity, and moving tenderness. This also reflects the characteristics of a new generation of military-themed literature, where more secular emotional elements are integrated, and the emotional worlds of the characters are revealed more fully. Amidst the bravery and unrestrained spirit of the soldiers, there is also a touch of sentimentality and loyalty, enhancing the story's appeal and reading pleasure. The novel also portrays how those devoted to military technology cannot escape emotional turmoil. The conflict between love and career is made clear: "Love is private, while career is open; love is romantic, while career is rigid; love is fragile, while career is endless; love can change, but career often forces one to walk a single path. Mixing emotions with work leads to chaos, destroying both." (See page 230 of the book.) This shows profound reflection and well-reasoned arguments. Of course, the emotional thread of the novel still has room for refinement. Jiang Zimei is clearly entangled in overly complex emotional relationships. Her love quadrangle with Fu Chaosheng, You Xiaoke, and Liang E has not been truly deepened, and it is all set in the same time and space, which raises ethical dilemmas. If these relationships were treated as historical connections, forming emotional bonds at different stages of history, it could better highlight the differences and complexities of their emotions, revealing the depth of human nature. Of course, in summary, this is a remarkably excellent novel, with a tight plot and clear structure, as well as lucid language and a bold narrative. It is evident that the author has a strong skill in handling the narrative of a novel. This is undoubtedly a work worth reading. The spectacular military medical stories it presents, the group of vivid characters, the backdrop of China-U.S. technological competition, and its foresight of future wars all make it highly compelling. It showcases the distinct style of a new generation of military-themed literature and is bound to carry other military-themed works to pioneer a new realm of military literature with a strong sense of the times.
In the new century, the military field is full of twists and turns, and technological advancements are dazzling. To seize the forefront of technology and stay ahead of war is the arduous mission of military scientists. Several mid-career scholars in the field of military medicine break through traditional thinking patterns, bravely challenge world military powers, innovate in life science theory and technology, and independently develop the "Gene Sword" project. Beyond the technological challenges, they must also navigate between concepts and systems, functions and conditions, as well as life and love. Since all of this is conducted in absolute secrecy, in addition to technological breakthroughs, they must also juggle between concepts and systems, functions and conditions, and life and love. At the most difficult stage of the project, a military and technological storm from a superpower disrupts all strategic plans and deployments. A life-or-death international competition unfolds in laboratories far from steel and smoke, where there is still strategic planning, bloodshed, and sacrifice, as well as the ups and downs of fate and the steadfastness of morality and responsibility. This is a new concept, a super.
