Story: "The Empress Xiao Chao of the Khitan" is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Wang Zhanjun, adapted by the nationally renowned storytelling artist Liu Lanfang. It tells the story of Xiao Chao (also known as Yanyan), the wife of Emperor Jingzong of the Liao Dynasty and the mother of Emperor Shengzong. Historically known as the Empress Dowager, she assisted the frail Emperor Jingzong, making decisions on military and state affairs for fourteen years, and later supervised the young Emperor Shengzong, ruling as regent for twenty-seven years. Her effective rule over the Liao Dynasty spanned forty years, making her comparable to Empress Wu Zetian of the Tang Dynasty. She advocated reforms and leaned towards the Han culture of the northern region, leading the Liao Dynasty to its peak under her governance. She was a malevolent female statesman and military strategist of the Liao Dynasty and an extraordinary female hero in Chinese history.
This book, based on a high degree of historical authenticity with reasonable artistic fiction,s the life of this Khitan empress in all its grandeur—from the golden halls to the iron warhorses. Liu Lanfang employs storytelling techniques to revise and adapt the book, highlighting the characteristics of oral literature, focusing on character portrayal, adding a touch of legend, and making the story thrilling and dynamic. The language is vivid and engaging, leaving the reader with much to ponder. Each twist and turn captivates the audience, fulfilling cultural and entertainment needs while imparting profound insights into life, making it an invaluable book.
