Tian Zhanyi has had a passion for arts since childhood, especially for Quyi (Chinese folk narrative arts). In 1956, he apprenticed under the renowned comic artist Wang Shichen to learn comic performance. In 1968, he apprenticed under the renowned storytelling artist Li Xinquan to learn storytelling performance. He successively created and performed short storytales such as "Green Pines in the Sea" and "Standing Wind Cloud." He participated in (amateur competitions) in Beijing multiple times and won awards. In 1978, he joined the China Railway Performance Troupe as a professional storytelling artist and apprenticed under the renowned storytelling artist Yuan Kuocai, in addition to performing Yuan-style storytelling "Xiao Fei Bu Yao" (Buying Medicine). He also created and performed short storytales such as "Rushing a Thousand Miles," "A Single Valve," "Sending a Son a Thousand Miles," "Globe," and "Supreme Hook."
Since 1982, he has collaborated with Shen Yongnian and others to create long-storytales such as "Secret Train," "Huemen Smoke," "Lin Xiangqian," "Republic of China," "Forbidden City Anecdotes," "Great Wall Treasure," "Li Zicheng," "Top Secret Action," as well as "General Mirror of Ancient and Modern Events" (a modern interpretation of classical books).
In recognition of Tian Zhanyi's achievements in storytelling about modern history, experts Wang Jingshou, Wang Jue, and Zeng Huijie wrote in the "Integration of Eastern Culture" series in the book "Discourse on Chinese Storytelling Art": "In the 'Commentary by Masters' section, it is stated that Tian Zhanyi is the most accomplished storyteller in the recent era when it comes to storytelling about modern history."
