This is a selected collection of foreign short stories from the 20th century, serving as the "sister series" to the already published Centennial Essence of Chinese Short Stories. The modern short story (short story), originating in the 18th century in the West, developed in the 19th century, and matured in the 20th century, boasts a long history and a wealth of masterpieces. It has had a profound influence on Chinese fiction. The publication of this collection aims to showcase the overall landscape and accomplishments of foreign short story writing over the past century, providing Chinese readers with a fine selection for reading and appreciation.
The collection includes 126 outstanding works by 125 authors from 41 countries. Works by Nobel Prize laureates are included whenever their length is suitable and they are innovative, without exception. Additionally, works by influential writers of the 20th century are largely featured. Even authors with less fame but whose works genuinely reflect reality and contemporary society are selectively included. Given the title "Centennial Essence," special attention was paid to the timeline when selecting authors and their works, striving for a balanced representation of early, mid, and late 20th-century pieces.
It can be said that the collection showcases works of diverse styles, schools, themes, contents, regions, and colors.
