Features: Zhang Zhidong was a pivotal figure in late Qing politics. At the age of 26, he passed the imperial examination as a tanhua (third rank), and in his early career, he served in institutions such as the Hanlin Academy and the Censorate. He held positions as the educational inspector of Hubei and Sichuan, primarily engaged in research and education. Known for his courage to express opinions, he was a prominent member of the Qingliu Party. At the age of 44, his official career flourished, and he successively served as the Governor of Shanxi, Viceroy of Guangdong and Guangxi, Viceroy of Hubei and Hunan, Acting Viceroy of Jiangnan, and Grand Secretary Minister of Military Affairs. He rose to the highest echelons of power, becoming a cabinet minister and achieving the pinnacle of officialdom. Zhang Zhidong was a renowned representative of the Self-Strengthening Movement. During his tenure in local governance, especially as Viceroy of Guangdong and Guangxi and Hubei and Hunan, he vigorously promoted modernization, establishing new-style schools, military academies, factories, and other institutions. He led the way in pioneering reforms and left a lasting mark on history.
