Rickets in children

Patient's question:

My child is 13 months old. The child had a fever and visited the county traditional Chinese medicine hospital to see a doctor. While there, I asked the doctor if my child's stomach was slightly larger than the other children's. The doctor used their hand to check and said that two ribs were protruding outward, indicating rickets. They advised me to give my child some AD fish liver oil to take. Later that afternoon, I took my child to the maternal and child health care center for a bone density test, which also confirmed that the child has rickets. The doctor recommended taking vitamin D and zinc gluconate oral solution, and asked me to come back for a follow-up check-up in a month.

Doctor's answer:

Hello, the diagnosis of rickets strictly requires blood index testing and wrist X-ray imaging. After the age of 1, it often improves or leaves behind some minor skeletal changes. If the child has not consistently taken vitamin D in the past, now taking two 800 IU per month for observation is the correct approach as handled by the doctor there. If the child sleeps well, there is no need to worry. Continued improvement still requires taking vitamin D 400 IU at least until the age of 2. You can supplement with calcium and zinc for a month, and try to consume 450 milliliters of milk daily to ensure adequate calcium intake. Happy holiday!
