Features: Village self-governance is a great initiative in the construction of democratic political systems in rural China. To date, it has gone through more than a decade of profound changes. Over these years, the system of village self-governance has awakened and continuously strengthened the interests of farmers, their democratic aspirations, and their awareness of the rule of law. However, in practice, this system has encountered many deep-seated social issues, highlighting the institutional barriers and systemic flaws in the construction of rural democratic politics. This book adopts a sociological perspective, through tracking, investigation, and empirical analysis of the national model village self-governance city—Lixi City in Shandong Province—uses real data and vivid examples to describe the social focal issues faced in the operation of village self-governance, analyzes the new challenges these issues pose to village self-governance, reveals the fundamental relationship between village self-governance and rural social issues, and explores the deep-rooted causes of these focal issues. It also proposes countermeasures and suggestions to resolve these social issues, helping people better understand and grasp rural problems under the conditions of village self-governance. Some chapters of the book adopt the form of discussions and one-on-one interviews with social members from different interest groups, social identities, occupations, and age groups in rural areas, presenting the complex psychological feelings and emotional experiences of farmers in their original form to readers, thereby creating a strong emotional impact on the audience.
