Features: Hou Baolin (1917–1993), a native of Beijing, grew up in poverty. At the age of 12, he began studying Peking Opera and later switched to crosstalk, first studying under Chang Baochen and Zhu Kuequan. He performed in areas around Drum Tower and Tianqiao in Beijing before gaining fame in Tianjin in 1940. From 1940 onwards, he performed crosstalk in duet with Guo Qiru, achieving remarkable chemistry in their comedic routines, which they continued to collaborate on for over 20 years. In the history of crosstalk, Hou Baolin is a celebrated and outstanding performing artist. Baolin made multifaceted contributions to the art of crosstalk. First, he led the effort to purify the language of crosstalk, elevating its aesthetic appeal by discarding vulgar and unrefined non-artistic elements. He adapted many traditional programs, transforming them into masterpieces—giving them a fresh, revitalized look. Second, while engaged in creation and performance, he emphasized theoretical research in crosstalk, befriending intellectuals and scholars, and co-authoring works such as The Origin of Crosstalk and Essays on the Art of Crosstalk, guiding the art toward greater self-awareness. Third, he created, compiled, and performed over 30 classic crosstalk programs considered masterpieces. This collection features representative programs created (or compiled and refined) and performed by Master Hou Baolin in the 1950s and slightly later, delighting crosstalk enthusiasts.
