In Lu Xun's creative career, essays were the field where he poured the most heart and reaped the most rewards. Lu Xun's essays contained much diversity. In terms of content, they had two characteristics: First, the Chinese society reflected in his essays had considerable depth and breadth, from which people could clearly see the historical appearance of modern and contemporary China. If viewed individually, his essays mostly commented on specific, small, and ordinary matters, but when compiled together, they formed a complete society. Therefore, his essays were also highly general and representative. Second, Lu Xun was concerned throughout his life with the reform of the Chinese national character, and this work was mainly accomplished through his essays.
