How can one get epilepsy without a family history?

Patient's question:

My family members have never had epilepsy, but I actually got it. I'm really worried. I only have mild epilepsy, and I often feel dizzy. Sometimes I even faint without any consciousness. I don't have any family history of it. I'm so frustrated.

Doctor's answer:

Epilepsy is not necessarily caused by genetics; factors such as fever in children, trauma, brain surgery, shock, burns, and others can also trigger epilepsy.
