Features: Historians generally refer to the era before Yao and Shun as the legendary period. However, the history of the Xia Dynasty lacks written records, and materials on religious matters in Hunan during the Shang Dynasty are also very scarce. Even if some exist, we cannot treat them as reliable historical sources. Therefore, when discussing the development of religion in Hunan, we may consider the period before the Shang Dynasty as the legendary era of religious development in Hunan.
During the Sui, Tang, and Five Dynasties periods, especially in the Tang Dynasty, China experienced a golden age of religious development. Hunan was no exception. At this time, both Taoism and Buddhism in Hunan centered around Mount Nanyue, radiating outward and giving rise to a large number of religious figures and sects with nationwide influence. Especially noteworthy is the Chan Buddhism of Hunan, which held a pivotal position in China at the time.
