Down syndrome high risk, please genetic counseling

Patient's question:

Now 21+3 weeks pregnant, undergoing a prenatal screening test.
Risk calculation item: Screening for Down syndrome
Screening result: High risk, please consult a genetic counselor!
Age risk: 1 in 1300
Risk value: 1 in 190
Risk cutoff value: 1 in 270

Doctor's answer:

The screening results indicate high risk, suggesting an amniocentesis should be performed. However, even if high risk, it does not necessarily mean the baby is a Down syndrome child. But for safety's sake, it is still recommended to undergo DS screening! Children with Down syndrome have severe intellectual disabilities, cannot live independently, and are often accompanied by complex cardiovascular diseases, requiring long-term care from family members. This can impose a significant mental and financial burden on the family.
