Patient's question:
Last October 1st, I experienced facial paralysis. After more than a month of acupuncture treatment, I was able to restore facial expressions, and the doctor said my recovery was good. However, in January 2015, I suddenly felt that the nerves on the affected side of my eye bag were twitching frequently, and sometimes others could notice it. Now, the eye bag on the affected side is very prominent. On January 29th, I had an electromyography (EMG) done: the examined muscles showed no abnormalities. The motor conduction velocity (MCV) results showed that the amplitude of the left facial nerve was lower than that of the right side (orbicularis oris differed by 0.5ms, orbicularis oculi differed by 1.3ms, and zygomaticus differed by 2.1ms).Doctor's answer:
Eyelid twitching generally occurs in a few situations: First, there is no problem with the muscle itself, but it is due to overuse of the eyes. Second, it can also occur if the orbicularis oculi muscle has not fully recovered from facial paralysis, resulting in relative muscle weakness. Third, it may be caused by excessive stimulation triggering increased muscle excitability due to facial paralysis. Without a physical examination, I cannot determine which type you have.
