It could be Mobius syndrome, it could be slow intellectual development

Patient's question:

This June, I took my 2.5-month-old boy to Beijing Children's Hospital for treatment. He has slow intellectual development, can only say simple words like "daddy," can walk, and does not interact or play with other children. His facial muscles are stiff, and his right eye constantly tears. Expert Wu Husheng diagnosed it as M?bius syndrome.

Doctor's answer:

Mobius syndrome: It is a congenital facial nerve palsy, often accompanied by eye muscle paralysis or even difficulty swallowing. The entire face shows almost no expression, hence the term "mask face." In some severe cases, limb movement disorders may also occur. Approximately 15% of patients with this condition exhibit delayed intellectual development. The primary cause is unknown brainstem nucleus dysgenesis or destructive degeneration during embryonic development, leading to damage to the sixth and seventh cranial nerves, resulting in the disease. The severity of the condition depends on the extent of the damage. Currently, there is no effective treatment for this syndrome.
