Baby has chronic diarrhea for months

Patient's question:

The baby is now ten months and twenty days old. Since birth, the number of bowel movements has been more than twice a day. The stool is loose, sometimes watery, sometimes foamy, and sometimes contains mucus. Green stools are less common. When potty-training, it always comes out with stool. Probiotics, smectite, and food accumulation granules have been taken, but they haven't been effective. The baby has been off breastfeeding for more than two weeks and has been eating diarrhea formula, but the stool hasn't changed, and the frequency has increased, even more foul-smelling than before! Massage therapy and traditional Chinese medicine have been administered, but the results are not significant. The baby's consists only of porridge, eggs, and lean meat, fruits, etc., and they dare not add anything for fear of worsening the diarrhea.

Doctor's answer:

The child is experiencing non-physiological diarrhea. Physiological diarrhea does not affect growth and development, and it is now believed that physiological diarrhea is a special type of lactose intolerance. The lactose-free formula you are currently using should address the diarrhea issue. Similarly, the child's diarrhea is not solely caused by lactose intolerance. Whether there is milk protein allergy cannot be ruled out, but there is currently no more evidence.
Given the child's current condition, the following recommendations are made:
1. Since the previously used probiotics, dietary accumulation granules, and zinc supplements showed significant effects, they can be continued. In particular, zinc supplements should be administered daily with an elemental zinc dosage of 20mg,10-14.
2. Solid foods can be gradually introduced, such as rice powder and mashed noodles. Start with one type at a time, increasing the amount gradually.
