New ABO Hemolytic Disease

Patient's question:

Main symptoms: Onset time: Laboratory test results: Elevated bilirubin, elevated jaundice, elevated total bilirubin, very high indirect bilirubin.

Doctor's answer:

It needs to be placed in an incubator and exposed to blue light, and blood exchange may be necessary if needed. In general, the hemolytic symptoms of ABO blood type are mild, and most children do not require special treatment after birth. As long as timely blue light exposure and medication are provided, the child's condition can be relieved. Generally, if the pregnant woman is type O and the fetus is type A or B, neonatal hemolysis may occur. ABO blood type incompatibility is relatively common, accounting for 20% to 25% of total pregnancies, but only 2% to 2.5% actually develop hemolysis, and it is usually mild. This is because fetal tissues contain varying amounts of soluble A or B substances, which can neutralize A and B antibodies. Mild ABO hemolysis is easily confused with physiological jaundice in newborns. In some cases, severe hemolysis occurs, but its progression is slower, and it may not reach its peak until the 3rd to 5th day after birth.
