Infant thumb adduction

Patient's question:

I saw a disease in a book today, and I'm curious. There's a child born who can't open his thumb all the time. His mother is very worried. Is the child sick, or what? I'd like to consult a doctor here about what to do if a baby's thumb is retracted.

Doctor's answer:

If the child is a few months old, the thumb is usually tucked inside. If it can be extended, it indicates that the child's intellectual development has reached a certain level. If the baby is older than 6 months, it is recommended to take the child to see a doctor. Some children are born with congenital muscle contractures of the thumb and may require surgical treatment. Therefore, it is important to diagnose as soon as possible.
(1) Mild: Over-arousal state, irritability, excitement, and high excitability (tremor, shivering), active reflex.
(2) Moderate: Inhibited state, drowsiness or light coma, hypotonia. In 50% of cases, there are convulsions, apnea, and weakened and sucking reflexes.
(3) Severe: Coma state, disappearance of reflexes, hypotonia or disappearance of muscle tone. Convulsions appear within hours to 12 hours after birth and persist, or the condition may be decerebrate rigidity.
