Features: Lantern riddles are a unique and extraordinary gem in the grand garden of Chinese character culture. They are a folk literary and artistic form to the Han nationality, combining knowledge, fun, and entertainment, appealing to both the refined and the popular. Since ancient times, lantern riddles have been deeply loved by people. The key to creating lantern riddles lies in the "de-jie" (creative interpretation) of Chinese characters and the words they represent. Therefore, the essence of solving lantern riddles also lies in discovering this "de-jie."
The term "de-jie" refers to the connection between the riddle and its answer not being a literal interpretation but rather a deliberate and playful manipulation of the characteristics of Chinese characters and the Chinese language. As a result, solving lantern riddles requires unconventional thinking rather than conventional logic. Thus, lantern riddles are a form of word game, and solving them is a "transcendental yet not transcendent" experience. Their knowledge, fun, and entertainment value all stem from this.
To promote the excellent traditional culture of our motherland, we have selected over 10,000 lantern riddles from ancient and modern times that are healthy in content, adhere to standardized language and writing (complying with riddle-making rules and the basic principles of Chinese characters and the Chinese language), and are both knowledge-rich and highly engaging. These riddles are divided into three volumes: "Lantern Riddles with Patterns," "Lantern Riddles of Personal and Place Names," and "Lantern Riddles of Words and Phrases," forming this series. We hope that this small series will further illuminate the splendid and enduring culture of lantern riddles.
