Features: Beijing History is a multi-volume academic monograph organized and compiled by the Beijing Academy of Social Sciences. It systematically narrates the history of Beijing, covering a time span from the appearance of Peking Man around 700,000 to 200,000 years ago to the late 1980s of this century. The geographical scope is largely based on the current administrative divisions of Beijing, with appropriate adjustments considering the changes in urban areas, administrative regions, and historical geographical environments across different dynasties. The book is divided into ten volumes according to the historical evolution and developmental characteristics of Beijing:
1. Volume 1: Ancient Times to the Northern and Southern Dynasties
2. Volume 2: Sui and Tang Dynasties and Five Dynasties
3. Volume 3: Liao Dynasty
4. Volume 4: Jin Dynasty
5. Volume 5: Yuan Dynasty
6. Volume 6: Ming Dynasty
7. Volume 7: Qing Dynasty (1644–1840), Part 1
8. Volume 8: Qing Dynasty (1840–1911), Part 2
9. Volume 9: Republic of China
10. Volume 10: Modern Era
The scientific and technical terms used in this book are based on those approved by relevant authorities; for those not yet approved or standardized, conventional usage is followed. Proper nouns and terminology related to Chinese history are generally based on the Twenty-Four Histories or other major historical records. Place names follow those approved by the Chinese Name Commission for Geographical Names; ancient place names are consistently annotated with their modern equivalents when they first appear, and for locations where the modern name cannot be determined, the current name of the administrative division or region is noted.
