Features: Outline of American Literature aims to outline the development process and fundamental characteristics of American literature from the oral literature of Native Americans to experimental literature at the end of this century. It seeks to reflect the rich connotations of American literature while also organizing a relatively clear outline amidst countless writers and vast works. The book consists of 17 chapters. In addition to the introduction, which covers basic literary knowledge, the commentary from chapters I to XVII spans from the colonial period to the end of this century, covering a time span of approximately 400 years. In these 17 historical outlines, each chapter is composed of the historical background, literary schools, commentaries on four or five representative writers, and analyses of important works. Each chapter intentionally highlights the close relationship between the sociocultural background and literary creation, as society is the source of literary creation, and literature is a mirror of society. Each chapter dedicates significant to commenting on writers and their works, because history is created by people. Without these writers and works, there would be no literary movements they represent, and literary history would become a rootless tree.
