Patient's question:
I want to know why I still have cerebral palsy even though I'm grown up. I'm so frustrated and upset. What should I do? I feel really down.Doctor's answer:
Cerebral palsy is often characterized by abnormal postures and delayed motor development as the main complaints. Although the brain damage or developmental abnormalities in children with cerebral palsy are non-progressive, their clinical manifestations often change as brain damage is repaired and development progresses. For example, severe neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy often presents with hypotonia in infancy, which gradually transitions to hypertonia. Balance dysfunction typically becomes apparent only when the infant develops the ability to sit or even stand.
