The Analects Today

Features: As the source classic of Chinese culture, the arguments and ideological propositions of the Analects have permeated China's political and educational systems, social customs, psychological habits, and behavioral patterns for over two thousand years. How can ancient classics be revitalized in the new "cultural reconstruction"? Li Zehou's The Analects Today is a book that addresses this very question. It does not simply provide literal interpretations and annotations of the classics but, within a "half-religious, half-philosophical" dialogue, separates "religious morality" (Inner Sage) from "social morality" (Outer King). The former becomes the pursuit of individual life meaning and human, while the latter becomes the form of modern governance, thereby cultivating human nature, emotions, and the importance of grasping the accidental nature of individual destiny in "cultural reconstruction." Since its publication by Anhui Literature and Art Publishing House, the book has been immensely popular. The new edition by Sanlian Bookstore is even more exquisite and complete, making it worth collecting. The Analects Today was completed between 1989 and 1994 and is one of Li Zehou's important works. It provides a detailed reading and interpretation of the twenty chapters of the Analects. The book follows a structure of translation, annotations, and notes. The translation strives to maintain the original form as much as possible, using literal translation. Proper nouns like "gentleman" and "petty man" are left untranslated, while important terms such as "benevolence," "ritual propriety," and "righteousness" are explained in dedicated chapters. The annotations draw on works such as Zhu Xi's Collected Annotations on the Analects, Liu Bongan's Rectification of the Analects, and Chen Shude's Collected Explanations of the Analects, aiming for conciseness and comprehensiveness. The notes are the author's comments, notes, and explanations. They may discuss the text itself, philosophy, or offer opinions, with no fixed rules, yet they are clear, insightful, and lively in style.
