Two works in this book are excellent works by the American postmodernist writer Kurt Vonnegut from the 1970s. Breakfast of Champions is a satirical and anti-traditional novel. The science fiction writer Kilgore Trout, who frequently appears in Vonnegut's works, and the car dealer Dewey Hoover are living machines in a country called Earth, often abbreviated as the U.S. They both have flaws and meet under the author's arrangement, which occasionally appears in the book. Readers can see the author's humorous and exaggerated language describing a mad world in this process. The illustrations drawn by the author are also a major feature of the novel. Player Piano is written in the first-person narrative, depicting the life of an elderly inmate who has been in prison three times, interspersed with historical episodes such as the Great Depression, World War II, the Korean War, McCarthyism, and the Watergate scandal. Using black humor, it satirizes social reality and achieves a unique social effect.
