Goethe (1749-1832) was a German poet and playwright. He was born in Frankfurt on the Rhine. Goethe received his early education at home. He was exceptionally gifted, with strong comprehension and memory. He quickly grasped the forms of language and concepts of things, excelling particularly in rhetoric and composition. At the age of 16, he attended the University of Leipzig to study law. Three years later, he left the university due to coughing up blood and later transferred to the University of Strasbourg in April 1770. In August of the same year, Goethe met Herder, who had a profound influence on his life. During his time at Strasbourg, Goethe deeply immersed himself in an unhappy love affair, which, however, inspired him to write beautiful lyrical poems. The Sorrows of Young Werther was written based on his personal experiences. In late August 1771, after receiving his doctorate in law from the University of Strasbourg, Goethe returned to his hometown.
