Children don't talk

Patient's question:

My child is 1.5 years old and still cannot speak. I often teach him, but he doesn't follow along, only knowing how to say "Mommy" and "Daddy." What could be the reason for this, and will it have an impact on his future?

Doctor's answer:

Normal language development is related to many factors, such as genetics, hearing, environmental education, intelligence, and so on. These factors are interconnected, so there is a significant individual variation in language development. Most babies can say single words around 9 months old, 2-3 words by the time they are 1 year old, and can say several meaningful words or simple sentences by 1.5 years old. Around 2 years old, they start using pronouns like "I" and "you," and by 3 years old, they can speak fluently.
The main reasons for language disorders are often due to being in a multilingual environment. It is recommended to provide the baby with a monolingual environment and slow down the speaking speed when talking to them. Reading stories to the baby regularly is also beneficial. Encourage them more and criticize less. At the same time, it is important to let the baby have more contact with the outside world.
