It is estimated that each lesson will take 6 hours, with a total of 360 hours for the entire book. Upon completion, students should be able to master basic English pronunciation and grammar, as well as approximately 3,000 core vocabulary words, gaining preliminary skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Although we had been considering the publication of such a popular English textbook for several years, the direct reason was a speech by Vice Premier Li Lanqing. On October 26, 1994, Vice Premier Li visited Beijing Foreign Studies University, met with school leaders and some professors, and said that one of the major obstacles to reform and opening up was language. Although many people had been learning English in recent years, few had truly mastered it. English should be widely promoted, and Beijing Foreign Studies University should take on this task. After hearing Vice Premier Li's speech, we decided to immediately begin compiling a textbook aimed at quickly mastering English. In addition to English professors from Beijing Foreign Studies University, two associate professors from Guangzhou Normal University were invited to participate in the compilation. Over the past dozen years, many English textbooks have been published, but most are designed for specific learners, such as textbooks for university English majors (not fewer than six or seven sets), for students in liberal arts and science/engineering majors, for middle and primary school students, and for professionals working in fields such as tourism, foreign trade, and healthcare. However, textbooks specifically designed for part-time learners and truly aimed at popularizing English are very few. When designing this textbook, we considered the needs and characteristics of part-time learners, striving to help them master English in a shorter time, as many of them are engaged in busy work and spending a lot of time on English study is not feasible. In other words, learning English with this new textbook must be time-efficient and yield quick results. This is naturally not an easy task. However, if we fully utilize the accumulated experience in foreign language teaching over the years, it is possible to learn English quickly and well.
