To avenge his wife, he painfully leaves his lover Joan and sets out to track down Hack, eventually luring him into a forest one night and killing him. World War II breaks out, and Lavik, along with other refugees, is arrested by French police. The prison truck carrying them passes through the Arc de Triomphe, heading toward an uncertain distant destination.
