Features: The Public English Test System (PETS) is a national English proficiency examination system designed and administered by the Ministry of Education Testing Center. PETS is China's only multi-level authoritative English testing system for all citizens, with no restrictions on age, occupation, or educational background. People can choose to take any level of the exam based on their English proficiency. PETS consists of two relatively independent sections: a written test and an oral test, which comprehensively assess candidates' listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Qualified candidates are awarded corresponding English proficiency certificates to meet the needs of English ability assessment and the talent market. The standards for PETS Level 2 and Level 4 exams are used to reform the current college entrance examination and postgraduate entrance examination English tests, while PETS Level 2 and Level 3 exams are used to replace the public English tests in vocational and undergraduate examinations of higher education self-study programs. The PETS Level 5 exam has replaced the English test in the National Foreign Language Proficiency Test (WSK·EPT). The Ministry of Education Testing Center has formulated the syllabi for all levels of PETS, providing detailed introductions to the design background, level standards, examination formats, structures, contents, and sample papers of PETS, serving as guidelines for standardized question setting, candidate preparation, and teacher guidance. Additionally, to meet the learning needs of candidates, the center has organized the compilation of a series of examination textbooks. The "National English Test Syllabus" and the "National English Test Textbook" series are exclusively published and distributed by Higher Education Press under the authorization of the Ministry of Education Testing Center.
