What should I do if a newborn has nasal mucus?

Patient's question:

Detailed medical condition and consultation purpose: Discovered that my son has nasal mucus in his nose. Yesterday, while sneezing, he expelled a small amount of nasal mucus, and noticed some still in his right nostril. However, the family members didn't let him clean it, saying it's nothing to worry about. What should I do?

Doctor's answer:

If the nasal crust is blocked at the nostril opening, you can gently roll it out with a sterilized cotton swab. If the nasal discharge is deeper in the nasal cavity, you can first apply 1 to 2 drops of physiological saline, cold boiled water, or breast milk into the nostril to slowly moisten and soften the crust. Then, gently squeeze the sides of the nose to help the crust gradually loosen, and finally roll it out with a sterilized cotton swab.
Maintain a moderate temperature and humidity in the room to avoid excessive dryness. At the same time, give the baby more fluids to prevent overheating and chills. The mother should follow a light diet.
