Methods of treating amblyopia in children

Patient's question:

Detailed medical condition and consultation purpose: My child suffers from pediatric amblyopia, and has been treated for three months. After reaching 0.8, it has not improved further. I am very anxious. Is there any method to enhance the treatment effect?
Previous diagnosis and treatment history and effectiveness: Red and blue light stimulation therapy.

Doctor's answer:

There are many methods for treating childhood amblyopia, but regardless of which one is chosen, there are indications and limitations. The appropriate method should be selected based on the nature of the amblyopia, with the goal of improving vision and restoring binocular vision function.
Once a child is diagnosed with amblyopia, the first step should be to dilate the pupils and conduct a refraction test to understand the refractive status. Appropriate glasses should be worn to correct hyperopia, myopia, or astigmatism. Proper glasses are beneficial for correcting strabismus.
There are many treatment methods for amblyopia, some of which require regular hospital visits due to limitations. However, the treatment for childhood amblyopia is lengthy and costly, so home treatment is the most convenient and economical option. It not only reduces the burden on parents but also ensures consistent treatment. Currently, there are many small treatment devices and methods available for home use, which can be selected and applied under the guidance of an ophthalmologist. Common methods include the following:
(1) Patching therapy: Patching therapy is an ancient and effective method for treating amblyopia. It is one of the simplest, most economical, and most effective methods for treating childhood amblyopia.
① Strict monocular patching: This method is suitable for anisometropic amblyopia and strabismic amblyopia. Children with these conditions often have better vision in one eye, while the other eye has poorer vision due to deeper suppression. The method involves tightly covering the better-seeing eye with a black cloth eye patch, forcing the amblyopic eye to see, stimulating it, and gradually eliminating suppression to improve vision. For children under 3 years old, the patch can be worn continuously for 3 days, followed by 1 day without the patch. For children over 3 years old, the patch can be worn continuously for 3–5 days, followed by 1 day without the patch. During treatment, the vision of the amblyopic eye should be monitored, with follow-up checks every two weeks.
