Patient's question:
Patient Age: Under 2 years oldMy child has been hiccuping frequently recently, and he also hiccuped during last winter. This summer it's better, but sometimes he still does. The food I give him isn't too cold. The only thing is that he laughs a lot, and he'll hiccup when he breathes in air conditioned air. I was wondering if there's anything I can give him to help, or any other good methods?
Also, my child doesn't eat properly and often drinks water. Is this normal? Thank you for the doctor's answer! First follow-up question: He's just turned 21 months old now. Is there any good method or any good medicine? Second follow-up question:
Doctor's answer:
Hello: Normal people can experience hiccups, and the following methods may help you stop them as soon as possible.Eat a teaspoon of sugar
Dr. Dubois says: I have found that swallowing a teaspoon of sugar dry (without water) is an effective method. It can stop hiccups within a few minutes. Sugar in the mouth may alter the original nerve impulses, preventing the diaphragm from contracting intermittently. As for infant hiccups, dissolve half a teaspoon of sugar in 100°C water and let the infant try it.
Bend over to drink water
When hiccuping, I tilt a large glass of water (full) forward and drink from the other side of the glass. This method is quite effective, and I often recommend it to healthy hiccup sufferers. Professor MacCallin says.
Hold your breath or exhale slowly
Some people try holding their breath briefly, while others exhale slowly and steadily. Give it a try.
Eat without talking
When eating, it’s best to do so quietly so as not to trigger hiccups. But for those who already have hiccups, try holding your breath and swallowing food when you feel the next hiccup coming. Repeat this 2–3 times, then take a deep breath and repeat the steps.
Hold your breath while drinking water
Fill a paper cup with water and place it on the table. Insert your index fingers into both ears. Bend over, use your thumbs and pinkies to hold the cup, hold your breath, and then drink the water quickly.
