Features: A Study of Wang Anshi's Academic Thought focuses on the academic thought of Wang Anshi. Wang Anshi was a renowned statesman, thinker, and litterateur of the Northern Song Dynasty. The "New Learning of Jing Gong" (Wang Anshi's school of thought) dominated the intellectual landscape in the later Northern Song Dynasty and had a significant influence in later generations. A Study of Wang Anshi's Academic Thought examines the interdependent relationship between academic inheritance and intellectual evolution, as well as between scholastic struggles and the discussion of issues. It analyzes the intellectual content embedded in Wang Anshi's academic discourses through his own intrinsic framework and modern theories. The purpose of this book is to analyze Wang Anshi's evaluations, annotations, and discussions of various academic schools of thought, revealing his own perspectives and their position in the development of this school of thought. Furthermore, by examining Wang Anshi's interpretations of different academic schools, the book explores the dominant spirit of his academic thought and determines its place in the intellectual history of the Song Dynasty and even in the intellectual history of ancient China.
The main body of A Study of Wang Anshi's Academic Thought is divided into three chapters, exploring Wang Anshi's thoughts on classical studies, Confucianism, and his discussions on the Classics, Buddhism, and Taoism. Wang Anshi's classical studies thought takes ancient classics as its textual foundation, widely absorbing various later theories to interpret them. The content covers a wide range of issues, including the universe, human life, and politics. Particularly in terms of governance, he comprehensively and meticulously discussed the political wisdom of the ancient Three Dynasties, Confucianism, Legalism, and Taoism.
Wang Anshi's Confucian thought focuses on the philosophy of life. In his theory of human nature, he combined the creative spirit of ancient China with Confucian and Buddhist ideas, believing that human nature is the innate vitality of a person, an absolute and perfect goodness that transcends the moral distinctions of good and evil. In his philosophy of life, he integrated Confucianism with Taoism, Buddhism, and the views of figures like Yang Zhu and Mozi from the pre-Qin philosophers, offering his own answers to issues such as the relationship between the individual and the collective, life principles, and the ideal personality. Unlike traditional Confucianism, which emphasizes ethical relationships and collective values, Wang Anshi placed greater emphasis on individualism and personal fulfillment.
