Author: Ji Shichang et al.
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2003-12-01
Features: The first part of this book features Mao Zedong's handwritten self-composed poems, totaling twenty-nine poems in thirty-two pieces, arranged in chronological order of their creation. The textual annotations are placed before each handwriting. For some poems, the author wrote them multiple times during his lifetime, some of which were written before their official publication, with slight variations in wording. Additionally, there are a few minor errors in handwriting, all of which are explained in the textual commentary in the second part of the book. The second part includes textual analysis, providing explanations for each poem, the historical background of their creation, publication dates, little-known stories behind the works, and appreciations of the calligraphic art. Mao Zedong the Calligrapher not only teaches readers how to appreciate Mao Zedong's calligraphic art but also reveals, for the first time in a unique and exclusive manner, the moving stories behind each piece of Mao's calligraphy collected in the book. It uncovers the profound and rich inner emotional world of Mao Zedong and provides detailed analyses of his calligraphic techniques, structure, and spatial composition, highlighting both his strengths and weaknesses. Initially, the plan was to publish this series in six volumes. To make the book more comprehensive and forward-looking, while also considering market and reader factors, the finest essence was ultimately selected and condensed into this single volume. Shao Hua provided many valuable primary sources.
